Oh man, oh man, music! So much brilliant music and so little time. What to list to, what to miss. Is music the spice that brings that little glint of glee into your life, or are these just the mad rantings of an obsessed “critic”?

Apologies

Let me offer most sincere apologies to so many musicians that, in my thoughtless haste, I said I would do reviews and interviews for but thus far haven’t materialised. Life has been an endless rollercoaster of doom and at my psychologically weakest since finishing high school, I have had trouble dealing with the most mundane tasks let alone attempting quality writing. Eclectomatic is way out of hand and far too big for me (currently trying to play all positions) to tackle on my own in its current form. From now on I will not be taking on more than a couple of reviews at a time. This should help keep everything ordered and flowing. I will be doing belated reviews of some of the most interesting music I have been sent out, so watch out!

Something New and Exciting

Anyway, during all this “downtime” I have had a chance to listen to a lot of new music that is just truly great and I want to talk a bit about some of it. First up we have Defrag, a self described blend of IDM, industrial and dubstep. Defrag’s latest album, Lament Element, released all the way back at the turn of the decade, is experimental electronica on the cutting edge and post-industrial at its best. Though at times fast and jagged, Lament Element is balanced, elegant and assessable to anyone looking for something different and adventurous. Seriously, if you are a fan of IDM, industrial, EBM, experimental electronica check this album out (I mean it!). Head on over to www.myspace.com/defrag for a taste of the goods or pick up Lament Element from iTunes

iammynewt fronted by Chris Cozort, the next project I want to talk about, is another project blazing new territory on the post-industrial frontier. Cozort’s fingerprints are all over the shop from years of production work with an epic slice of the industrial and electronic underground, appearing on compilations and remixes and finally the first iammynewt release, Altercation (2009). Featuring remixes by Cyantic, Defrag, Mangadrive, Torrent Vaccine, Skullduggery, Pask and Empty (all great artists), you start to get the idea; this guy doesn’t work in a vacuum. More accessible than even Lament Element, there is a desolate sparseness to some of the tracks and a good mix of DnB. Also well worth checking out is Ohaka, Skullduggery vs iammynewt with even more of a sparse DnB bent than Altercation, punctuated with faster and more jilted moments, you will be left wanting more.

I was going to talk about some more great bands but I need strong coffee and I’m refusing to write this article in two parts mainly because I’m lazy but also because there are some other things I would like to write about. For now just a quick mention, if you haven’t had a chance to hear any Magadrive, for a poultry 3.99 USD (you would have to pay more to get scolded to death with a cup of hot coffee) you can download These.Blades.Will.Never.Rust from CD Baby. This album, with a more dance electro bent than either of the previous mentioned projects, has some great moments (whole songs worth of them in fact) and should get you amped for the release of their follow up album PURGE.THE.SKY due 1st of June.

For those of you who have actually heard Snareburst’s Alpha Demo and were disappointed, or just got lost and confused hold the faith, Beta album will tear your brains apart from the inside-out and blow chunks out the top of your skull. Check out www.intolerancerecords.com for a full list of all vendors.

Chinese Goblin Factory, I can’t leave these guys out! Orchestral meets breakcore, avant-garde, the spectrum of experimental, the east and dare I say a hint of jazz, this is probably one of the most captivating bands I have discovered in recent times. For a limited time you can pick CGF’s 5 track City of Glass EP for a price specified by you and for the cash strapped student who is living on rice and fried noodles, yes you can name 0 as your price.
